What Lorem Ipsum actually is

Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin, taken from Cicero's De Finibus Bonorum et Malorum of 45 BC and cut apart by printers who needed text nobody would read. It has been the standard in typesetting since the 1500s, and it reached modern design through Letraset dry-transfer sheets in the 1960s.

It survives because it does one thing well: it holds the space without holding attention. The letter distribution is close enough to English that a paragraph looks like a paragraph, and the words mean nothing, so a reviewer looks at the design instead of editing the copy.
