Lorem Ipsum for Figma

Figma has no built-in placeholder generator, and installing a plugin for it means granting file access for something you need occasionally. Generating text here and pasting it into a text layer takes a few seconds and requires no permissions at all.

Using it well

Lorem Ipsum for Figma, in practice

Plain text is the right format for Figma. Markup does not render in a text layer, so HTML or Markdown output would paste in as visible angle brackets and asterisks.

The sections below cover the mechanics that trip people up in Figma specifically: how a text layer resizes once content lands in it, and why a duplicated component filled with identical text hides the failure you were looking for.

Paste into the layer, not the canvas
Double-click into the text layer before pasting. Pasting onto the canvas creates a new text node with default styling instead of filling the layer you meant to fill.
Vary text across component instances
Identical strings in every instance of a card component make a design system look tidier than it is. Generate several different blocks so your variants get tested against uneven content.
Use auto layout with realistic lengths
Auto layout resizes around its content, so the placeholder length you choose directly determines what the frame looks like. Test both the shortest and longest realistic strings, not just a comfortable middle.
Resizing behaviour decides whether text overflows
A text layer set to a fixed width and height will clip; set to hug will grow the frame; set to fill will wrap inside its parent. Most overflow surprises in Figma are this setting rather than the text, so check it before you shorten the copy. Pasting a long block into each of the three is the fastest way to see the difference.
Duplicated components need different text
Copying one card six times produces six identical strings, which makes the layout look far more even than it will ever be. Generate a few different lengths and paste a different one into each instance — the point of a mockup is to show the layout under uneven content, and identical duplicates hide exactly that.
Mockups outlive the meeting they were made for
A Figma file is not a throwaway the way a local sketch is: it gets linked in tickets, exported into decks, and handed to developers as a reference. Placeholder text in it will be seen by people who were not in the room, so it is worth choosing a variant that is obviously filler rather than one that reads as approved copy.
Apply the text style before you paste
Pasting into an unstyled layer gives you Figma's default face at its default size, which tells you nothing about your own typography. Apply the text style the element will actually use first, then paste, so what you are judging is your type scale rather than the tool's. This matters most for the styles nobody checks: captions, helper text under inputs, and the small print in a footer, which are usually set once and never seen against realistic content again.
